Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a method of identifying and removing unwanted tension throughout the body caused by habitual patterns of movement and posture. This tension that many of us unknowingly carry around affects the way we perform our daily activities and leads to many problems such as back pain, stiffness in the joints and a gradual loss of the ease and freedom we enjoyed when we were young.

By working with what Alexander called the ‘primary control’ we can gradually remove habitual tension and learn to use ourselves with greater awareness, freedom and poise.

The Alexander Technique is a process of re-education. In the same way that you would go to a music teacher to learn how to play an instrument, the Alexander teacher teaches a better use of our bodies. Our Alexander teacher will help you to see how your movement style contributes to your recurring difficulties – whether it’s a bad back, neck and shoulder pain, restricted breathing, perpetual exhaustion or limitations in performing a task or sport. Learn how your habits restrict your movement and to replace them with ones that enhance it.

There are no contraindications for the Alexander Technique and it can be learned by anyone at any age. Lessons are on a one-to-one basis and last from 45 minutes to an hour and a range of activities are covered.
